Grassroots Kirk — I Applaud You
By Cynthia Spurr on Dec 3, 2009 in Uncategorized
I have this friend (isn’t that always the way?). Kirk. He’s a really great guy.
I found out a few weeks ago that he started a grass-roots effort to give back to the community. Now I’ve known Kirk for a couple of years, but this is the first I have ever heard about his effort to give back to the people who need it most.
His goal and I quote “… is aimed toward servers, bartenders, cooks, chefs and anyone else in the F&B industry who wants to help. My hope is that those individuals who earn tips or paychecks by serving food throughout the year will be able to serve one last symbolic meal of non-perishable goods to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. http://www.blogger.com/www.foodbankonline.org.”
I wondered, like I think you are right now, how did this all come about? Kirk said: “It all started like this:
In late 2006, I had a small bag of 6-7 cans sitting by my front door, waiting to be taken to the Marriott and placed in a box by the time clock.”
Amazing that something so small has, 3 years later, grown into something much bigger. I am constantly amazed by his stamina. Where does he find the time?
The restaurants, and there are lots — 28 at last count (check out his site for the complete list) — have donated not only the food so needed by the Foodbank, but their time as well.
I wanted to take a moment and publicly applaud him and his efforts to give back. I’m not in the Food and Beverage industry, but I do have the ability to spread the news about his efforts and those that supported and helped him along the way. There will be a lot fewer families in need thanks to his efforts and those of the local restaurants in the area.
If you live in the Norfolk area I hope you find a night to visit the restaurants that support his cause, praise them for their participation in The Green Bean Challenge, and have a great meal!
If you are not in the area, I encourage you to seek out a food bank near you and give to them. I think this year more than most every food bank is in need.
GO Kirk GO! We are proud of you and your efforts to make a difference in a lot of families lives.
PS: I don’t often ask for re-tweets, but for those of you following us, I would appreciate a re-tweet.

I think that is great. There are too many people who think only of themselves and not how to help others!

That is a great story. Remember that most big organizations like food banks and such started out as small, grass-roots efforts. Great job!
