Block Party

Recently I was asked if I’ve ever experienced writer’s block. My immediate response was no, but then I got to thinking about it. What exactly is writers block? According to Wikipedia, it’s defined as “a phenomenon involving temporary loss of ability to begin or continue writing, usually due to lack of inspiration or creativity.”
Okay, I suppose I’ve had my share of moments when I wasn’t sure how to say something, but it was never due to problems with inspiration or creativity. All one needs to do is tap into their senses for a kick start.
Close your eyes and listen for a moment. What do you hear? An early morning lawn mower can trigger a story about how your parents made you labor over yard work in the summer, while your friends took off for the movies.
The smell of newly cut grass can transport you to the kiddie pool in the backyard. You don’t even have to mention it was just last year, with a margarita in one hand and a hotdog in the other.
Now open your eyes and take in the view. How does it differ from where you grew up? How does it compare to other cities? Other states? The neighbor’s new party deck and hot tub, next door?
You see, it doesn’t take a lot to get your mind moving and your fingers flying. Sometimes, all it takes is sight, sound, or smell, add a little reminiscing, and stir well. And, of course, it never hurts to add a little party to the mix.
