Book Cover for The SecretThe SecretRhonda Byrne
An easy read that explains how the world you live in is created by your thoughts. I couldn't put it down. It changed the way I looked at life and the way I think about things. I read this book years ago and I still find myself returning to it to shift my thoughts whenever I think I need to refocus.
Book Cover for This is the Year You Write Your NovelThis is The Year You Write Your NovelWalter Mosely
This is not a huge book about writing, which is one of the reasons I liked it. It wasn't bogged down with exercises or long speeches. Mr. Mosely simply stated what he does and why. He gives you great clues on how to focus and why. Sometimes I find it's the little things in life and as I slip out of focus, I can grab his book and re-read it. It motivates me every time.
To Kill a Mockingbird Book coverTo Kill a MockingbirdHarper Lee
This is a classic piece of American literature. I highly recommend it as it shows how deeply prejudice is rooted in people. Even the intolerance of the past echos through til today. The characters are lively and at the right times funny. Their almost ignorance at the racial storm surrounding them is heartbreaking and yet at the end everyone is changed.
Secret Lives of BeesThe Secret Lives of BeesSue Monk Kidd
Lily doesn’t remember much about the mother she yearns for, who died when she was four. She has one memory of the day her mother died, an old pair of gloves, a photo, and an image of the Black Madonna with the words “Tiburon, SC” on back. Now fourteen, Lily and Rosaleen, her black housekeeper/caretaker, flee Lily’s uncaring father and racial persecution. Their natural destination is Tiburon, SC, where they are taken in by three black, bee-keeping sisters. The story, told in the first person by Lily, peels back racial facades to expose truth, love, and the secret lives of bees.
